Northernmost rural municipality in Darchula, home to the Byansi people and the Tinkar Pass trade route.

Agriculture

Byans reflects Darchula’s farming pattern: Mountain subsistence: maize, millet, barley, buckwheat; limited paddy in valley bottoms. Livestock (yak, chauri, goats) is central. Agricultural productivity is very low.

Carbon & forestry context

Byans lies within Darchula’s forest landscape: High mountain forests, alpine meadows and the Api Nampa Conservation Area provide large carbon storage and biodiversity (snow leopard, musk deer). Community forestry is present.
